RE: Timing of Trip to Alaska

In '04 we left home (Idaho) on May 7th traveling to Banff and Jasper on the way to AK. We were back home the 3 rd weekend of July. The timing was perfect, at least for that year. A few of the campgrounds weren't open yet but it was never an issue. Neither was finding fuel plus the summer crowds weren't on the road yet.
Snow was never an issue but remaining snow can be an issue depending on the winter. When I go again I'll leave about the same time.
Enjoy!

RE: Just Got Back From Denali....the cheater's way

"I heard from people who drove the Alaskan highway in Canada that the road is paved, but very bumpy and hard on their RVs. I cannot comment on that at all."
We drove up in 2005 from Idaho with no problems at all. There are always some construction areas during the tourist season to be expected.
The paved areas are fine but there are some frost heave areas. If you see the fog line getting waving, just slow down.
The hwy was fine. If someone expects the hwy to be like the lower 48 they will be disappointed.....

RE: Describe your experience at border crossing

Crossed into BC from ID in '05 headed to AK. Was asked the usual questions regarding alcohol, tobacco and guns. Agt couldn't believe I was from ID and wasn't carrying any guns. Told him I do carry if traveling in the States but not into Canada. He still wanted to search the TT. He asked if I was carrying a pocketknife and could he have it while he searched. Another agt took my wife aside and asked her if I was carrying any guns where would the bullets be? They also asked a few questions about food and off we went.
Entering back in to the States at WA we were searched again and confiscated our Canadian hot dogs.
The experiences were ok both times.

RE: Not going back!

We went to AK in '05 but not to see Anchorage. However, we did stay in Anchorage for a couple of days and found a nice RV Park out by the Army Base but don't remember the name. The park had a resident cow and calf moose. Pretty cool stuff!
Hope to go to AK again someday and re-visit Seward, Homer, Valdez, Hyder, etc,

South Africa

I know that South Africa travel isn't a RV topic but I thought maybe, just maybe, some of our fellow RVers had been to SA. I was the high bidder on a six day Photo Safari with ZuluNyala safaris to be taken in 2009.
Anyone been there, done that? If so, I'd appreciate any and all info you could send my way.
DW and I are also considering a few days in Cape horn while there. Anyone been there, done that?
Anyone know of any webpages similar to this one for SA? Any SA blogs?
I gleaned a ton of info from this site for our 2005 AK trip and thought maybe I could get some useful info from here for SA.
Thanks in advance!!
